The Dědice Military Training Area is located in central Moravia, in the eastern part of the Drahanská Highlands, about 10 kilometers north of Vyškov.
Its area is 15,817 ha (158.17 km2); its width is from 6 to 15 kilometers and length up to 20 kilometers. An area designed for military use 2,992 ha, an area designed for agricultural use 12,825 ha. The elevation of training facilities is 450 – 550 meters above sea level.
The beginning of the military training area goes back to 1935. The military garrison came to Vyškov in October 1, 1936, when the armored regiment equipped with LT-35 light tanks was stationed here. From 1937, the Military School of Armored Equipment was also stationed in Vyškov. A part of the garrison was also a military airfield, the construction of which started in 1937.
In July 1937, 4 training facilities for training of the heavy border fortification companies started to be built in the military training area. Training in these fortifications was launched in 1938.
After the occupation of Czechoslovakia, the German higher and lower warrant officer school of the Tank Corps was domiciled in the barracks and intensive training of divisions for the Eastern Front started. At that time there appeared a great number of blockhouses and engine houses designed for towing the practice targets, especially dummy tanks. Training of tank units of the German Army (Wehrmacht) required enlarging of the training area which caused a displacement of several adjacent villages during the war. The displacement of villages had several stages starting from autumn 1940 till the end of 1942, while the last stage, which was planned for spring 1945, was not finished due to the end of war.
After the end of the war, these areas were taken over by the Czechoslovak armed forces.
The Ferdinandsko chateau was built in 1757 by Count Ferdinand Julius Troyer von Troyerstein, who was the Olomouc Bishop from 1745 – 1758.
